Come & Sing Verdi Requiem
with Adrian Partington, with evening concert with Bristol Concert Orchestra and soloists from Welsh National Opera

Venue: Colston Hall, Bristol

w280bcsverdi

The day will start at 10am with a choral rehearsal, followed by an afternoon rehearsal together with orchestra (Bristol Concert Orchestra) and soloists from Welsh National Opera in preparation for an informal concert at 7:30pm, all under the inspirational baton of our superb conductor, Adrian Partington.

We hope to fill the hall with singers and leave a little room for an audience for the evening performance!

The aims of the day are to:

  • Have fun and enjoy performing this thrilling piece with full orchestral accompaniment and professional soloists
  • Raise funds for 2 local charities - all profits are to be donated to BRACE (supporting research into Alzheimer's) and The Julian Trust (supporting Bristol's homeless)
  • To celebrate the opening of the Colston Hall's superb new multi-million pound foyer redevelopment

Singers of any standard are welcome - there will be plenty of singers there who know the work well to help out those who may not be so familiar with it - the main aim is to have fun! Scores will be available to hire on the day for £1 - please bring your own if you can!

Tickets for singers are £15 (£5 for under 19s in full-time education) 0117 962 4991

Please tell all your singing friends - the more people we have singing the more spectacular the day will be - there are nearly 2,000 seats in the Colston Hall, so let's try to fill them all!

The Magnificat,
Cantata no.29 'Wir danken dir, Gott' ('We praise Thee, O God')
and the Motet 'Lobet den Herrn' ('Praise the Lord!').

In recognition of Peter’s distinguished career as an organist, the concert also features Handel's Organ Concerto Op.4 no.4, composed in 1735 and first performed as an interlude in Handel’s oratorio, "Athalia".

Acclaimed concert organist Margaret Phillips is the soloist. As it seems so appropriate to the celebratory theme of the evening, the concert concludes with the concerto with its original (now rarely heard) chorus of thanksgiving.

Bach’s St Matthew Passion was first performed at the Leith Hill Musical Festival in 1931 with a special massed choir of around 800 singers under the Festival’s founding conductor Ralph Vaughan Williams. The performance marked the opening of the Dorking Halls and was in memory of the conductor’s sister and co-founder of the Festival, Margaret Vaughan Williams who had died earlier that year. Eighty years on, the St Matthew Passion performance, now rotated with Bach’s St John Passion and Handel’s Messiah, will open this year’s LHMF season on
Sunday 13th March with Festival Conductor Brian Kay at the helm.

Thursday 17 March 2011 7.30 pm
Orlando Chamber Choir presents

Venue: St. Andrew Holborn,
5 St Andrew Street, London EC4A 3AB

20110319 Tenebrae Choral Society

The Christian liturgy of Tenebrae marks Jesus' suffering and death for humanity before the symbolic rebirth of spring. Orlande de Lassus' austere Tenebrae Responsories are offset by his richly plangent Lamentations settings and other penitential motets. James Weeks' new work Orlando Tenebrae, commissioned with support from the BBC Performing Arts Fund, revisits these ancient rites from a secular standpoint, juxtaposing Tenebrae texts with modern poetry of oppression.

  • Orlande de Lassus (1532 – 1594) – Timor et tremor
  • Orlande de Lassus (1532 – 1594) – Lamentatio Prima (from Lamentations a5 for     Maundy Thursday)
  • Orlande de Lassus (1532 – 1594) – In monte Oliveti
  • Orlande de Lassus (1532 – 1594) – Lamentatio Tertia (from Lamentations a5 for     Maundy Thursday)
  • Orlande de Lassus (1532 – 1594) – Tristis est anima mea
  • Orlande de Lassus (1532 – 1594) – Tenebrae factae sunt (from Tenebrae     Responsories)
  • Orlande de Lassus (1532 – 1594) – Animam meam dilectam (from Tenebrae     Responsories)
  • Orlande de Lassus (1532 – 1594) – Aestimatus sum (from Tenebrae Responsories)
  • James Weeks (1978 – ) – Orlando Tenebrae (2010 – world premiere)

Rehearsals

· Monday 14 March 7.30-10.00 at Rydes Hill School
· Saturday 19 March 10.30-13.00 at St Joseph's School (next door to Rydes Hill). The children's choir will also attend this rehearsal.
· Saturday 26 March afternoon timing to be confirmed. I'll take into account that people are coming a distance and may not want a huge gap between end of rehearsal and start of concert (7.00pm)

Vocal Scores

Please let me know if you have your own Zimbe! score.
Please let me know if you would like a copy of the Tippet Spirituals in advance of the 14 March rehearsal.

Divisi

Please let me know whether you you would prefer to sing 1st or 2nd.

Concert dress

I haven't yet consulted with Joanna and Arndy, but I am thinking along the lines of a similar style for both ladies and men: black trousers and red/yellow top/shirt (i.e. Zimbe! colours).

Singers

There will be a number of local singers taking part, but if you know of any other experienced singers you think would like to sing (especially if they are already familiar with Zimbe!) then do let me know.

Publicity

Brochures for the Guildford International Music Festival are now out, and the website is up and running - www.guildfordinternationalmusicfestival.co.uk. Please spread the word!

I'll continue to update you with anything relevant (including a reminder of directions to Rydes Hill/St Joseph's school), but do tell me if you need any further info at any stage
